Dorothy Martin, the creation of Jeanne M. Dams, is an American widow, an avid fan of Agatha Christie, and one of the most delightful amateur sleuths since Miss Marple. Sixty-something, plumpish, and a lover of outrageous hats, Dorothy and her husband, an academic, had long planned to move to England when he retired. But when he dies unexpectedly, she moves to the small town of Sherebury, England by herself and begins to put the pieces of her life back together.

In The Body in the Transept, the first book in the series, Dorothy is looking forward to her first Christmas in England. But when she stumbles over the body of Canon Billings in the transept after attending midnight mass, her life changes radically. Feeling responsible, she begins to ask questions only to learn that Billings was a difficult man who made more enemies than friends. But who killed the cranky canon? He was almost universally disliked, and the entire town is filled with suspects. Against the counsel of her new friend, Chief Constable Alan Nesbitt, Dorothy decides to find out.

Note: Each book in this series can be read as a stand-alone, but there is a good deal of character development along the way, so it’s best to read them in order. Jeanne M. Dams also writes the Hilda Johansson Mystery Series.
