D.I. Andy Horton is the creation of Pauline Rowson. Tough, tenacious, and fallible, Horton doesn’t always work within the rules. Emotionally scarred by the sudden disappearance of his single mother when he was ten, he passed from foster home to foster home, well on his way to becoming a juvenile delinquent, when a cop and his wife adopted him and turned his life around.
In Tide of Death, the first book in the series, D.I. Andy Horton stumbles over the naked, badly beaten body of a man on the beach while out for his early morning run. Just back on the job after an eight-month suspension based on trumped-up charges, he is assigned to the case and teams up with his favorite partner, Sargent Barney Cantelli, to find the man’s killer. But just as they learn the identity of the first victim, a second body is found.
A marine mystery set on the south coast of England with a fast-paced plot filled with lots of twists and turns, fully drawn characters, and a vivid setting focusing on the glamorous yacht world of Portsmouth and its seedy criminal underside, Tide of Death is a good read.
Note: While each book in the series can be read as a standalone, there are continually developing storylines involving Horton, his estranged wife, his superiors, and his attempt to discover what happened to his mother, so it’s best to read the books in order.
